CALIFORNIA PARALYSIS LAWYERS
ASSISTING VICTIMS OF PARAPLEGIA & QUADRIPLEGIA THROUGHOUT THE STATE
Paralysis is the loss of function of the muscles in a part of your body. Being unable to move part or all of your body is one of the worst results of a catastrophic injury. In addition to the emotional distress that comes from being paralyzed or from having a loved one paralyzed, there are also concerns about how they will be able to support themselves and their family, pay for medical bills and ongoing health care costs, secure rehabilitation therapy, and continue to live a functioning life.
At B&D Law Group, APLC, we can help you fight for the full recovery you are owed. While financial compensation cannot undo what you have been through, it can allow you to obtain the critical care you need to continue living a happy and full life.
Call our California paralysis lawyers today at (888) 977-2238 or contact us online to request a free consultation.
Forms of Paralysis
Paralysis can be permanent or temporary, complete or partial. Paralysis that occurs in one side of the body is called hemiplegia, and when paralysis occurs in both sides of the body, it is called diplegia. Paraplegia refers to a person who cannot feel anything in the lower part of his or her body. Quadriplegia refers to the inability to move both arms and legs.
The extent of the paralysis is usually determined by the location and severity of the spinal cord injury. Typically, paralysis occurs downward from the point of injury or trauma to the spinal cord. The damage to the nerves in the spinal cord causes the signals between the brain and other parts of the body to be severed.
Paralysis can also cause secondary issues, such as:
- Chronic pain
- Respiratory conditions
- Depression
- Bladder and bowel control problems
- Sexual dysfunction
- Skin issues
Injuries to the cervical spine (upper back and neck) are more likely to lead to more severe paralysis and quadriplegia, while injuries to the thoracic spine (mid-back), lumbar spine (lower back), and sacral (tailbone) are less likely to cause life-threatening injuries and quadriplegia.
How Paralysis Is Caused
Paralysis can be caused by a medical condition or disease or by trauma or an accident, such as a spinal cord injury. Automobile accidents account for 55% of all quadriplegia injuries. The accidents can be a result of negligence and reckless driving, or they can be a result of a defect in the design or manufacturing of the vehicle.
Pedestrian accidents, accidents involving SUV rollovers, and truck accidents are most likely to cause paraplegia or quadriplegia. Other causes of quadriplegia and paraplegia include construction site accidents, falls from scaffolding, sports accidents, amusement park accidents, and medical malpractice.
